The Lion dance is one that forms of dance, which is vigorous and is different from any other dance form in Malaysia; it is performed in Chinese functions and festivals (New Year in China). The origin of lion dance is closely linked with the origin of Chinese new-year Parties. What we have heard is, during ancient times there was a mythological creature named Nian terrorised China and it seems that they devoured there people on the New Year eve. The only animal to wound this beast creature was the lion. Hence, what the villagers did was that they made masks, dressed themselves like a lion, and started frightening the beast.
In accordance with the legend (Lion), Lion dance in Malaysia is believed to welcome good fortune, as well say bid bye to evil spirits. Our lion dance is known for its perfect elegance, co-ordination and nerves of steel. We have a minimum of two dancers to give life to a lion – one to control the head, eyes and mouth movements where in our other dancers will act as the body. One of our first dancer who controls the head will determine the movements, where as the second will move to the rhythm of the head. This is not a simple task for our dancers because the lion’s head is brilliantly adorned with lot of feathers, glitter and fur; it weights from 9kg to 15kg and is considerably a heavy burden to hold this specially while moving vigorously.
We make the head of the lion with papier-mache or bamboo at times even both, It is made in such a way that eyes will blink and the mouth will snap. Therefore, our first dancer should have perfect co-ordination in spite of creating any burden to the others.
